Community Poem for Downtown/Little Italy/Gaslamp:
Bright Lights That Never Go Out
By Nick Coates, Udeema Shakya, Benny Jimenez, and Cindy Ocotitla
I am from starting my morning to the buzz of city traffic.
From navigating around one way roads
And having a skateboard for transportation.
I am from going home in an elevator
And hearing planes fly overhead carrying people from faraway places.
I am from shopping at Horton Plaza and the boutiques and popular stores in Gaslamp.
From buying nice clothes and bows for my hair from a night out in the town
And sipping lattes in comfy warm coffee shops.
I am from intriguing diversity inside every store and restaurant I enter.
I am from compact yet cozy apartments.
From modern and old homes
And delicious fresh peaches from the local farmer’s market.
I am from a rich history and the Haunted Hotel.
I am from dusty old books sitting in a new modern paradise.
From the parties down under that children can not enter
And the forgotten homeless who are never far out of sight but seem to disappear,
Bypassed by far too many people.
I am from walking down the street and hearing the words “Spare Change” at every other corner.
I am from the beautiful chalk art and the crowded film festival.
From Cos-play grown-ups at Comic-Con
And the Gaslamp sign that glows every night.
I am from the ships that have been docked in the harbor for years
With secrets that hide away waiting to be found.
I am from Downtown.
From the bright lights that never go out.
